By Car –  The A1/A1(M) motorway provides, fast, easy access from the South. From the North choose from the A1 coastal route or the A68 cross-country ‘holiday route’ through Northumberland and Border Country. From the West, the A66 provides a scenic cross-Pennine route from the Lake District and M6 motorway.

By Coach – There are several National Express coach services daily to Durham from London and other major centres. More information can be found here

By Train – There are around 16 high-speed main-line services to Durham from London, covering the journey in 2,5 – 3 hours. Fast through-trains run from most other parts of Britain. For details telephone National Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950 or visit

By Air and Sea – Durham is easily accessible from Newcastle and Durham Tees Valley Airports, both served by regular domestic and international flights. On nearby Tyneside, ferry services operate to North Shields throughout the year from Ijmuiden (Amsterdam).

During Your Stay – Durham’s Interactive Public Transport Map allows bus travellers to see the full public transport network for Durham at the click of a mouse. The map also includes details of bus routes in all of the County’s principal towns, along with timetables for all local bus services.


John’s is an easy 20 minute walk from Durham’s railway station. Walking directions can be found here.

Driving: please note that driving in the centre of Durham is restricted and parking space scarce. If you are planning to drive to Durham, please contact Kaja at and we will do our bast to arrange a parking permit for the duration of your stay.

Public transport: public transport in the area of the Bailey is extremely limited. It is, however,  possible to take The Cathedral Bus that runs from the train station to the Cathedral on Palace Green. St. John’s  College is only 2 minutes away from the Cathedral. Tickets to travel on The Cathedral Bus cost 50p and are valid all day.

Taxis: a taxi from the train station to St.John’s will cost Ł4-5. Taxis are often available at the train station and at the top of North Road, a 2 minute walk from the station. However, at peak times you might have to book a taxi in adavnce. Information about local taxis can be found here.
